"We are coming and the day is nigh when all your EU institutions will be plain dead", declared Nigel Farage in the new European Parliament. Despite the statement's rhetorical excessiveness and the fact that pro-European forces remain the majority, there is a visible minority at the national and European levels that obviously does not represent fringe and eccentric political forces but an intense sentiment expressed by a significant number of European citizens. Have we arrived at a point where Europe is afraid of Europe? The 2014 European Parliament elections suggest this is not the case. The results do not refute the European Union but in fact reaffirm its strength and its citizens' forbearance in keeping the edifice intact. The EU remains something "valuable" and to preserve it, Europe's citizens conceded to sacrifice much more than before.
