Summary, etc "This account of the Minoan eruption of the Thera volcano, which is both scientifically authoritative and easily understood by the layman, is based on the one hand on study of the thick layers of its deposits on the island and underwater research around the island, and on the other on comparative studies of other major volcanic eruptions for which we have more recent data.
We follow the phases of volcanic activity in the prehistoric settlement at Akrotiri in two ways: Firstly, by observing the stratigraphy of the volcanic materials ejected in the eruption and which covered the settlement. Secondly, by interpreting the damage and distortion of the buildings on the criterion of the volcano's paroxysms in the course of its activity.
Dr. Vougioukalakis's observations as a volcanologist confirm and supplement what the archaeologists excavating the site had ascertained from the early days of their investigations. The earthquake that preceded the eruption was indeed destructive, and the volcano left the inhabitants little time to remove the dead and injured from the ruins and to repair the buildings. They evacuated the settlement in time, but probably did not manage to leave the island."-- Publisher's description.
