"The geographical position of the Ionian Islands at the north-western fringes of the Aegean world and their insular character were contributing factors in the shaping of their unique cultural identity, individually and as a group, in the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. In this work, all the categories of archaeological evidence - tombs and cemeteries, settlement sites and artefacts (pottery, weapons, tools, jewellery) - are treated chronologically and thematically with the aim of reconstructing the archaeological profile of each of the islands and of the island region as a whole. The emphasis is on continuity through change, and the adoption or adaptation of foreign stimuli. Historically, there emerges a pattern which points to alternating periods of vitality and openness to long distance connections, on the one hand, and provincialism or isolation on the other. Spanning the chronological period from 3000 to 800 BC, this study is of interest just as much to archaeologists and students of the prehistoric cultures of the Aegean region as a whole as to those studying specific periods, or categories of its material wealth."-- Publisher's description.
