"The subject of this book is Athenian public and private building from the time of Peisistratos until the end of the Peloponnesian War, the most brilliant period in Athenian history, in Athens, in Attika, and further afield.
In the first part of the book the buildings and building projects known from archaeological, epigraphical and literary evidence are discussed in chronological order and considered in their historical setting.
An attempt has been made to arrive at the motives behind the projects and, consequently, at those of the people who took the initiatives for them. In this way the general lines along which Athenian building policy developed during the period are indicated.
In an introductory chapter the procedure adopted in the undertaking and execution of the projects are discussed.
The second part of the book contains a catalogue of all public and private buildings known from the period. A few essential data are given of each particular item, accompanied by plans and references. Maps and diagrams illustrate the development of Athenian building in Athens and in Attika."-- Book jacket.
