Summary: "Over many years, public collections in North America have been enhanced by major works of Greek and Roman sculpture. Some collections have been widely published, but a treasury of notable monuments in smaller centers remains almost unknown - both to specialists and to the general public. This volume presents the riches of a multitude of American collections to the scholar, who may have come from across the Atlantic, and to the art lover, who may have admired a famous sculpture in Europe but not heard of an equal masterpiece nearer home. The nearly 350 objects beautifully displayed here demonstrate the variety of classical holdings in America. They range in time from prehistoric Cycladic marble statuettes to late Roman portraits and sarcophagi, and come from all regions of the classical world. Eighty-one American and Canadian collections are represented, including both small university galleries and larger public museums. A cooperative publishing effort of the University of California Press and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the lavishly produced volume reflects many years of work by the acknowledged authority on classical sculpture in North America. In 1955 Cornelius C. Vermeule began keeping a list of Greek and Roman sculpture in American collections. Continually updated, that unpublished list has been the only reference of its kind. An illustrated selection of the works of major quality and interest has long been awaited. The sculptures, arranged by period, are accompanied by concise descriptive entries for the benefit of the scholar and the general reader. The entries give the name of the museum, provenance, and material. An index lists the museums by city. In an introduction Professor Vermeule describes the role and development of sculpture in antiquity and offers the first coherent analysis of the forces of taste, economics, and scholarship that have interacted to leave an amazing legacy of classical sculpture in America." -- Book jacket.
