Summary: This volume serves as a catalogue for the first public display of part of the Packard Humanities Institute's collection of more than 850 drawings done by Edward Dodwell and Simone Pomardi during their visit to Greece in 1805-6. Dodwell's published studies and drawings did much to stimulate European and particularly British interest in both contemporary and ancient Greece, and the collection is an invaluable record of the country as it was before the War of Independence and the creation of the modern Greek state. The collection shows the antiquities and landscapes at a time when Greece was part of the Ottoman empire, and this volume illustrates the full range of types of drawings in the collection, from quick pencil sketches to fully worked watercolors. The catalogue is accompanied by introductory essays designed to set the collection in its historical, cultural, and artistic context.
